USB 2.0 with XP Home. Problem detecting drives from reboot.

I have been through all of the USB posts in the last 300 in this group and
people seem to be having all sorts of problems with USB drive detection.

I have 7 devices connected via a 7 port USB 2.0 hub but after each reboot
the system fails to detect one or more drives, however repeated switching
the power supply on/off to the missing ones it finally detects them all.

The main drive which is missed most often is a Philips JackRabbit CD/CD-RW
drive which failed to be detected for up to 5 minutes when is registers and
is OK until the next reboot.

If any contributor to this excellent forum has an answer to this phenomenon
I would be very grateful if they could point me in the right direction.

Dell laptop with 2 USB 2.0 ports, XP Home with SP1 recently re-installed on
newly formatted C:\ drive, CD/CD-RW integral with laptop.

All available updates installed and no other problems.

TIA

Is the hub separately powered? Are any of the devices separately
powered? It sounds like you have too many devices depending on using
the computer's power supply.

I was able to solve my USB problems by connecting the "troublesome" devices
directly to the PC. It seems some devices just don't like hubs. Put slow
(USB 1.1) devices on the hub and as many 2.0 devices as possible directly on
the PC ports.

Thank you both for the information about the USB problem.

The Hub is a D-Link 7 port powered hub and all of the devices are powered
with their own PSU's.

The Philips CD/CD-RW drive (self powered) is connected separately to one of
the USB 2.0 port and the hub to the other.

I have also tried Belkin powered hubs but the problem is the same.

Look for firmware updates on the hubs and PCI cards...

The Philips CD/CD-RW drive (self powered) is connected separately to one of
the USB 2.0 port and the hub to the other.

Make sure it's using a good quality USB 2.0 rated cable - preferrably the
one supplied with it. USB 1.1 rated cables or long cables may not work.
