I am running windows XP SP2. Itried to install a USB 2.0 PCI card. The
system freezes while trying to install the drivers.

I have tried uninstalling and re-trying with no luck. The system runs great
without the card, I just wanted the 2.0 ports. I want to try everything
before I look at the card.

Any suggestions?

Dave

See if you can make the card work by disabling the pre-existing USB ports(on
the mainboard) from Bios/Device Manager. You can also turn Off all
background software temporarily using msconfig.

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type MSConfig and press Enter.
3. Click the Startup tab.
4. Click Disable All
5. Click OK.
6. Restart the system.

If you are getting a message "System Configuration Utility you are using the
selective startup for troubleshooting your system", I suggest you check the
check box in that window and click OK. This occurs if you are using the
Selective startup option and not using the normal startup to reduce the
number of startup programs.

I tried both at different times. Just dsabling the existing USB ports did
nothing. Windows froze again loading the PCI board. When I disabled the
startup items, everything appeared to load OK but I could not get into device
manager to see if the devices were there. Device manager just showed a blank
screen. Not sure what that meant. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Dave

I'm a silver-surfer with no letters after my name, just a little native
intelligence and innate curiosity. I too installed a USB2 card on XP/SP2
machine recently - cheap 2-port card.

Originally had problems, but these were overcome by deleting EVERY instance
of USB in Device Manager, rebooting, and letting XP sort itself out, after
which, all 6 original USB and the 2 new USB2 ports work just fine, as does
the new USB2 4 port hub..

My theory, based on sequence of events and initial problems seen, is that XP
needs to allocate USB resources in a specific way/sequence. And, as XP/SP2
already supports USB2, could be that the "native" drivers are all you need.

Try just installing the card, rebooting without drivers. THEN - leaving the
card in place, delete(uninstall) EVERY USB entry from Device Manager (make
sure you have a cabled mouse/keyboard in place first) then re-boot.

If that doesn't work, have a look at the entire content of the driver disk.
There may be a "readme" which gives detailed instructions. Such files always
worth looking at first, as the procedure is frequently not as
straightforward as just fitting the card, loading the drivers. (The number
of people who DIDN'T read the XP2 install "readme" resulted in HUNDREDS of
unnecessary posts!)

Do post back your results ...
Sincerely, Len.

You may want to try to disable the onboard USB by going to your BIOS. That
can cause a usb power problem.
