I have recently purchased one of these devices, and the
instructions state that I have to make sure that I have
installed the USB 2.0 host card first.

My computer is approx 12 months old, running windows XP
professional, how do I find out whether I need to install
the host card or is it already in my computer ?

Ta for any help

Chas

Any advice given is my attempt to show appreciation for all
the excellent help I've received here but I'm no MVP so it
may only apply NUGS (Normally, Usually, Generally, Sometimes :)

You should be able to hook it up to *any* USB port in your PC,
but it will only function at high-speed if the port in your PC is
a high-speed port. The documentation sounds confusing.

The manual for your motherboard should say whether USB 2.0 is supported. If
your system is only a year old, it probably is.

Start/Control Panel/System/Device Manager: USB Host Controllers will be
labeled "Enhanced" for Hi-Speed USB (formerly USB 2) and "Standard" for
USB (formerly USB 1.1)

Should be: Start/Control Panel/System/Hardware Tab/Device Manager.

My 6 month old P4 says 'Standard' but manufacturer says
they're 2.0- I've got no 2.0 devices hooked-up yet.
Guess I'll find-out for sure when I get 1.

Thanks for that, I've tried it, all I get is this :

Intel 82801BA/BAM Universal host controller 2442
Intel 82801BA/BAM Universal host controller 2444

no mention of enhanced or standard - any further thoughts?

Your computer is too old to have USB 2.0. If you are going to install a
USB 2.0 card then you need to have SP1 installed and the drivers come
with it. Then follow the mnufacturers instructions. :-)

Of course it's not. He said it is about a year old. I bought an MSI
motherboard with USB 2.0 support in June 2002.
