USB 1.0 vs 2.0

hello,

i'm planning to buy a new laptop shortly. I have an external drive that has
a 1.0 usb connection. i've noticed that the new laptops have a 2.0 usb port.
i was wondering if my 1.0 external drive will work in a 2.0 port? If not, is
there something i can buy so that it will work.

Yes.

A v2.0 port will work with v1.x devices. You just wont get the full benefit of USB v2.0

i guess if nothing else, the external drive won't write any faster than it
does now, but that's fine. <smile>

You'll miss the higher speed.

USB v2.0 is a 480Mb/s specification and USB v1.1 is a 12mb/s spec. However, the limiting
factor would be the transfer rate of the hard disk in the "external drive". This could <=
12Mb/s but certainly not 480Mb/s. Even USB v2.0 rated drives to reach this speed.
