Aside from the security/file access issues, I have grown quite fond of Vista
EXCEPT

why do I now need to type http:// in the browser bar, always. IE does not
complain, it just sits there waiting forever until I go back and specify the
protocol. even on WWW sites.

This is the one issue that annoys me multiple times every day.

Is there any way I can re-set?

I'm not seeing that problem. I just tried it.
Two things:
1) You are doing this in Internet Explorer, right? Not Windows Explorer? I
could be wrong, but I think I read somewhere that while Windows Explorer and
IE shared some integration in previous windows versions, they no longer do
so in Vista as a security measure. So if you're trying this in Windows
Explorer instead of Internet Explorer, that could be the issue.

2) An old trick that has been in Windows long before Vista: Type in only
the center part of the address and then Ctrl + Enter. So, for MSNBC, just
type in "msnbc" and then hit enter while holding the Ctrl key. That
automatically puts in the ".com" and brings you to the site. Try that and
see if that works for you.
It's not a perfect solution. But if, using the example above, you used to
type in www.msnbc.com (not to mention the "http://") this method at least
gets you there with fewer keystrokes.

Have you tinkered with the IE settings at all? Under Tools>Internet Options
?

can't you just type in the domain name, then hit <Ctrl>+<Enter> like always?
ex:
- type "google" (no quotes)
- then press <Ctrl>+<Enter> - this enters the leading "http://www." and the
trailing ".com" for you...

Type in only the center part of the address and then Ctrl + Enter.

When I was new to VISTA / IE7 I'm sure I came across a place where one
could also set another key combination to set a different completion of
the URL -- like SHIFT+CTRL+ENTER > .gov or .org

You used to be able to do this in a version of IE before 6 even ISTR
but does anyone have an idea where this additional shortcut is hidden?

Toby

Do you have "English(United States) [en-US]" specified in the Tools/Internet
Options/General/Language Button?
