pls what are the fundamental differences, technically,
amongst the different microsoft operating systems?

windows operating systems such as win3x and win9x
are dos based (no matter what microsoft tried to project)


then there is windows NT (which includes XP)
with NT based operating systems any application your run
(including a dos-like command prompt) are each run in their own virtual
machine


with win3x or win9x if one application crashes
it can "contaminate" other appllications or make the entire OS crash

with NT based operating systems since each app runs in it;s own memory
space...if one application fails, it is much less likely to crash the entire
OS
or "contaminate" other apps
