I am having a very bad problem with my PC. I am using Windows XP home ed.
When I am brought to the sign in screen during start-up I am told that the
page filing memory / virtual memory is low. It also gives instruction on how
to correct the issue, i.e. by going to control panel. The problem is, when I
try to increase the memory, it will not allow me to do so beyond the
parameters it already states. At the moment my PC is at a stand still. When I
fail to increase the virtual memory I am prompted that windows will do so
automatically. So I click yes. But, once I have done that the PC crashes and
must be restarted with am improper shut-down. I am out of ideas. I have tried
and failed to run a virus scan in and out of safe mode. I have tried system
restore but was told that the machine cannot be restored and that no changes
have been made. Also, when I ran the virus scan it stopped and stated that a
fatal error had occurred.

Also, I cannot connect to the internet and am told that my AOL software
needs to be reinstalled also, that my Norton software needs to be uninstalled
and reinstalled. This feels very serious. A virus may be responsible.
Basically, nothing is functioning in Windows unless through safe mode.

Maybe windows will have to be circumvented to solve the problem. Can it be
solved in DOS or thought Safe Mode with Command prompt?

Guys I’m desperate. I am sending this message from another PC, which I will
have to come back to tomorrow to check your replies because I cannot check
them at home….Hope you can come up with something quick.

See you tomorrow

Yours,

Joe

PS. the message i am getting is "Your System Has No Paging File, or the
Paging File Is Too Small"

Try system resore..to a earlier time.Or at virtual memory unclick the
"default" and click custom..the increase memory, you probablt tried that?use
disk clean up and defrage.increasing virtual memory slows down the hard drive
though.Install more ram memory so system doesn't need virtual memory. If your
hard drive is almost full it won't let u increase virtual, delete or copy some
to cd.

Take it to a competent computer repair professional to backup your data and
do a repair. The other option is do a clean install.

Rock,

What will be the effect of a clean install? will it be similar to formatting?

Please advise

PS. I did try a system restore but was told that the system could not be
restored to an earlier time. Now if I go to system restore in, safe mode, all
the restore points have disappeared. I should mention that I have a hard
drive of 111GB but is quite full with only 5GB of Free space. Could this
anything to go with the problem? I did not think so initially because I has
been lower than that in the past but I have tried to delete some files to
free up some space.

Hard drives are low cost these days. You might want to add a drive or get a
bigger one.

I have you a link for how to do a clean install. By it's very definition,
it means to remove what's on that partition and install XP "clean". Either
format the volume and install XP or delete the partition, create a new one,
format and install XP.
