Hi

I need your help :

I am trying to create my first index, a mark-up index, by embedding mark-up
"tags" in the Word document.
As far as I know Word automatically looks up the page numbers at Print time
and generates and formats the index for you.

But ...

I can not see the index in the print preview and when I print the documeny I
don´t get an index : - (

What am I doing wrong ?

thanks in advance

Edgler

You seem to have the same problem that I have. I can't figure out how to print an index without printing the whole document. Did you get any answers?

Hi, Edgler,

When you say you're embedding mark-up "tags" in the document, I assume
you went to the Insert > Index and Tables dialog (Insert > Reference >
Index and Tables in Word 2002 or 2003) and clicked the Mark Entry
button, and that inserted an {XE} field in the document.

After the entries are marked, you still have one more step to do. Put
the cursor at the end of the document (or wherever else you want the
index to appear). Go to the same dialog once more, [optionally change
whether the numbers should be right-aligned, whether subentries should
be run in, and other options], [optionally click the Modify button to
change the paragraph styles used in the index], and click the OK
button. This inserts an {INDEX} field at the cursor location. This is
the piece that looks up the page numbers and formats the index.

One other bit: The {XE} fields are automatically formatted as Hidden
text, and the "show/hide" (¶) toolbar button is turned on so you can
see them. Because the fields take up space that won't be used in the
printed version, the page numbers in the index (and table of contents)
may be wrong. Click the button to turn it off, and highlight the index
and press F9 to update the page numbers.
