Hi and HELP!

I would firstly like to apologise in advance if I break any "News Group"
etiquette or am posting in the wrong area. I am new to this so just let me
know if I have done anything the wrong way and I will remedy it next time.

Problem:

Normally, in Windows, you would simply right click on a drive or a directory
then select search, type in your criteria (eg "*.txt" or just "txt"),
windows would then go away and find everything that suited your request and
display it. The problem I am having is that when I do this it simply sits
there (not even the search animation comes up) and the only way out is a
ctrl+alt+del. Also I seem to be having problems with downloading and
installing windows updates as well as installing application directly from
the PC itself.

I have Windows XP with all of the critical updates installed (I think,
sometimes I have had to download and then reboot when it stalls and then
attempt the install part after the reboot, sometimes I might have to do this
a number of time before it tells me that the install has been successful). I
have a 512/128 DSL internet connection running through Norton Firewall 2004
as well as a NAT firewall on the router.

Can someone help, I am desperately trying to get some urgent things done and
don't have the time to re-install everything (including the OS).

If someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly
appreciated.

Regards

Merlyn

Thanks but everything was going well until it asked for the "Service Pack 1
CD" or access to a directory that contained SP1.

Where would I find the actual SP1 File to download, in the past I have only
ever downloaded it via windows update which installed directly from their
server and seems to leave no actual SP1 install file(s) on the PC. I could
be wrong and just don't know where to look.

Anyway do you know where I can find SP1 to download (without having to
install it) or where I may find it on my PC as I have (I thought) installed
it from MS just today.

Hi

Try this:

There may be a folder on your hard disk/partition named i386. See if you
can find that folder in Windows Explorer, then point to that instead of the
XP CD.

OK, found SP1.

Thanks
