You need third party software to convert to a .pdf. Ideally you would use
Acrobat (Standard or Pro, not Reader) but I've often recommended PrimoPDF
(www.primopdf.com).
You will need third party software to do this. SnagIt 8 www.techsmith.com
will produce any of those formats (and a whole raft of others) from a Word
document (or any other application). There is a demo that can be used in
this instance.

Graham Mayor - Word MVP
I downloaded the trial but it only seems to convert IMAGE files and mine is
a text file (Microsoft Word .doc file). Can I still use this and HOW do I
load the file in, to convert it??

It adds itself to your list of printers. After you print to it, it opens a
"save as" dialog.
It'll replicate any document you can print as a pdf, including vectors,
graphics, text and layout.
