Upgrading Windows XP Home to Office XP Small Business

I was recently given a copy of Microsoft Office XP Small Business by a
friend. She knows I'm having some difficulties on my current HP installed
version of XP Home. My question is, do I have to perform a clean install and
erase my entire hard drive of all data, or can I only install the new
operating system and keep all of my files and programs intact.
Either way, I do intend to back up everything of value on CD in the event
that something goes wrong.
What kind of time am I generally looking at to perform this installation?
I am a bit touchy about my machine, and like the Borg, I accept nothing less
than perfection from it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

"Microsoft Office XP Small Business" is not an operating system
upgrade...it is an Office application. Return the software to your
friend since it is of no use to you and can only be used on the
original computer it came with.

If Windows XP came preinstalled on your HP computer, then
carefully read the following:

HP Pavilions that ship with Microsoft Windows XP do
not come with recovery CDs. Instead, they use a hidden
space (partition) on the hard drive to store the recovery
information.

Read the following HP article thoroughly. I would recommend that you
follow the HP procedure for performing a "destructive recovery":

Microsoft Office XP Small Business Edition is _not_ an
operating system; it is a productivity suite containing Word, Excel,
etc. It cannot be used to replace WinXP Home.

Thanks guys. I put the CD in and read what it was all about. I do have to
admit, I'm kind of new to the Windows world. For the past 15 years or so,
I've been a Mac user and never had any problems. When the wife got a PC, I
had to make sure I was in a position to help her if anything ever went wrong.
Okay, I'm a PC virgin.

Thanks again for all your help.
