I'm trying to upgrade to Win XP Pro from Win 98 SE. I get
to the point where the installation program wants to
reboot, and it does so. After the POST, my computer
searches the boot devices, and then it locks up. Rebooting
with a floppy works, but I have to use the "SYS c:"
command to get Windows to boot again, to 98. What's going
wrong?

Hi Kevin,

#1 problem that inhibits upgrades are antivirus detection routines. Disable
or uninstall yours before beginning, and ensure that any av detection scheme
in the system BIOS is turned off. Then try upgrading. Further preparation
steps to smooth the process can be found here:

Rick,
I tried all that, and I'm still having the same
problem. I read that web page you linked to. I even went
so far as to uninstall Norton Systemworks. (Including
Norton AV) The boot disk/SYS solution still works, so I'm
not totally hosed, but I can't upgrade either the way
things are now.
