Jimbo

I'm trying to upgrade ME to XP. Whenever the XP tries to
restart to install the program the screen just goes dark
and everything stops. I can't figure out why.

On a (maybe) related note, I've got this virus scan
software that I can't uninstall. I've been able to
disable it but I can't find where it is that keeps
loading it at start up.

Would it be better to just go with a complete install
instead of an upgrade?

If you are having problems with the upgrade, a Clean Installation is
best.
It is best to uninstall, not just disable the AV it there is any
chance it is incompatible with Windows XP.
Clean Installation:

Look for it in Add/Remove Programs or the application itself.
You can also check their website for uninstall information.
If you know it is compatible, you can disable it either in the
application or MSCONFIG
From the Desktop, Start/Run
Type "msconfig" ENTER
Go to Start-Up tab.
Make note what is and is not checked.
Uncheck everything.
Click OK and reboot.
Start the upgrade.

Hi Jimbo,

I am a strong proponent of a clean install. You bought a new OS, why not let
it have a chance to show what it can do, without dragging old issues into
it. It has been my observation, most of the problems blamed on XP are truly
carried over from the old OS. You can do a clean install from an XP upgrade
disk, if you have a qualifying disk such as the retail ME disk. Backup any
important files and then, just set your BIOS to 1st boot from CD. Insert the
XP CD, reboot and follow the instructions from the following link. At some
point during the installation you will be prompted to insert the ME disk to
prove qualification for an upgrade. Oh yeah, disconnect all peripherals from
the box except the mouse, keyboard and, monitor before you proceed.

Greetings --

Any antivirus application should be completely uninstalled before
performing the upgrade.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

Thanks to all. This info is all very helpful. A lot more
responsive than Microsoft, I can tell you that.
