Hello all ...

I'm getting a repeating "CD Key invalid" message when I try to upgrade my HP
Pavilion 6630. I've tried the suggestions on Microsoft's website with no
success. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

John

Thanks, Carey. As I'd said earlier, I already took the tips on the first page
you referred to, but I'll try the installation support. I was hoping there
might have been something peculiar just to my particular PC.

Carey,
Apparently, I cannot get free installation support from Microsoft. They've
determined that HP supports my current installation, which I find at least a
little strange. If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

John

Do you have a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP?
Are you using the same Windows XP CD and the Product
Key that came with it?

Carey,

Yes, it is a retail upgrade version, purchased at a Staples store in my
area. I am using the CD and key that came with it.

Make sure you uninstalled any antivirus programs.
Then make sure the key is entered correctly.
A "B" make look like an "8" for example.

I have tried uninstalling my anti-virus, and I've double- and triple-checked
my typing with the same result.

Is there any way that I can run the setup from safe mode?

You cannot run setup in Safe Mode. As I mentioned earlier,
you are entitled to free Microsoft installation support if you
indeed purchased a "Retail Upgrade Version" of Windows XP.
It does not matter if your current Windows 98 installation
was installed by HP. Give Microsoft support another call.

It is extremely easy to misinterpret some of the characters in the
Product Key, especially with the font they used on some packages.

Common mistakes (and I have made all of them at least a dozen times)
include:

- Reading G as 6 or vice-versa
- Reading 8 as B or vice-versa
- Reading 5 as S or vice-versa
- Reading Q as 0 or O (0 and O are never used in product keys).

Good luck
