My upgrade from 98Se to XP won't work.
The software says at the installation stage that my C
drive is corrupted and it can not proceed. Windows 98 will
still fire up. What is corrupted on the C-drive I have no
idea.

Anyone got any advice

Run the program on the XP CD that checks the system for upgrade pitfalls.
Offhand suggestions: Do you have GoBack installed (uninstall it!) ?
Antivirus turned off? Boot protection turned on in BIOS?

Are you refering to the same program that gives you a
report of issues before it proceeds to copy the
installation files? If so it has a lot of entries any of
which could be the problem e.g. modem (SM56), printer etc
etc

Yes. The program that creates a report of potential problems -Upgrade
Advisor. Try uninstalling problematic software. Disconnecting problematic
hardware. Install the upgrade.

Then go online and look for some WinXP drivers for the hardware. Updates
for the software. May want to do this ahead of time to be sure these things
are available. Could download them and have them on hand for post upgrade.

If you have hardware that does not have XP drivers but there are Win2000
drivers available, those are always worth a try.

The problem arises when all the installation files have
been copied, so I have the report of issues with hardware
and software
The process then decides to reboot your PC. It is at this
stage that the C: drive is reported as corrupted and it
gives you no choice but to press F3 to quit.
I have started a thorough SCandisk in Safe mode but it
will take about 6 hours so I don't know there are no
problems as far as MS98SE is concerned but it's looking
that way.
My hard disk is partitioned into 2 10Gb chunks one with
MS98SE and the other with Linux. Is it possible that the
XP installation process can't cope with this?
