Upgrading to Windows XP

I purchased Windows XP to upgrade from Windows ME.
The copy I purchased is an OEM version.
When attempting to install, I am not given the option to
upgrade; only to install this new OS on another partition.
Can I upgrade Windows ME from an OEM version of Windows
XP? If so, how?

P.S. My computer is working fine; no software or hardware
problems.

Technically, OEM copies cannot be used to do anything but a clean
installation:
