I just upgraded my laptop from windows 98 to windows xp and all my programs from windows 98 got transfered over and I don't want that, anyone know how to fix this problem?

To resolve your dilemma, perform a "clean install" correctly:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

Note: If you are unable to activate Windows XP again via the internet,
then select the option to "activate by telephone".

to ensure you get what is called a clean installation (all data deleted and new installation
you should boot to the xp cd and start the installation, it will not be possible to start an installation that erases the harddisk first from within the operating system while its running. You will need to access your systems hardware configuration menus to configure how your computer boots and what harddrive or cdrom is used to boot to and in what order. This will take some guess work on your part but you have nothing to loose anyway, heck your gonna erase it all

1. start your computer u
2. press the required keyboard key to enter your systems BIOS or hardware config, may be called something differen
note: the key you must press is different for each machine depending on manufacturer, sometimes, Delete, sometimes F
most computers tell you very plainly when you start it what key to pres
3. locate your computers "boot sequence" configuration menu in the BIO
find some way to make it boot to the cdrom before it attempts to boot to the harddrive, but make sure the harddrive is somewhere in your boot sequence, just not first, your cdrom should be
4. insert your xp cd before you restar
5. save your changes to the hardware configuration and restart your compute
if done correctly you will see "press any key to boot from cd
6. press a key when you are prompted, and the install will begi
7. choose to instal
8. at the partition selection screen choose to remove all partitions, this is the quickest way to delete the dat
9. create additional paritions as you choose , you can create one or multiple partition
note: each partition will make thier own drive letter, though they will be the same physical harddriv
10. choose to install to the first partitio
11. at the file system selection screen choose, any of the "quick" options (example. ntfs file system quick
12. this will begin installatio
note: when you computer restarts as it will many times during installation, do Not "press any key" to boot from cd any more, this will start the installation process all over again
