Not so quick

I've had three separate companies tell me
that although it was practical with ME and 98
that it is, for most intents and purposes, not
possible to get an installed version of XP to
work with a new motherboard and that I will
have to install my programs again. Microsoft
says differently. I can see self-interest on
both sides. What do you say?

You will need to do a repair install and that will keep your installed
programs and settings, but will necessitate that you reapply all updates not
included on the XP CD used for the repair install. Detailed step by step in
the link below.

Move XP to new hardware.

I realize that is the way it's supposed
to work but Fry's Electronics and a few
local companies tell me it just doesn't
work. I did a small survey locally and
got a 5 to 1 negative on the process
working. The system should boot from
the installation CD but it doesn't, according
to them.

I am not sure what you are saying, but it sounds like you need to set your
BIOS boot options to boot from CD before hard drive. If you pursue the links
on my web site, I am sure you can resolve your problems. If you still can't
find it, then try explaining it again to this newsgroup thread in detail.

Does MS-MVP XP mean that you are in tech
support for Microsoft?

That's what I'm afraid of... the "at least".
Thanks
If you want more options, do a google search by typing Clean install XP or
XP Clean install.
If downloading the SP1 update is a problem, I think it is included on the
newest AOL CD's. You can access the updates without installing AOL. You can
also get a SP1a CD from Microsoft for shipping and handling charges.

Thanks, but why wouldn't I download the
service pack? Takes too long? Does SP1
help a lot as far as installation is concerned?

You should follow your conscience.
But you might try doing a google
search to see if I am a troll.
