Hello, I have a pc built by ABS and am planning on upgrading the Motherboard
and CPU. It came with an OEM version of Windows XP. I have replaced the
original MB already because it died, and I think I had to activate XP over
the phone, if I remember correctly after doing so. The current MB is almost
identical to my 1st and was a replacement under my warrenty with ABS. Now...
I'm wanting to get a faster CPU(and in so doing, need a new MB), but I
started reading that this could cause problems, because I have an OEM
version of XP.... Has anyone with experience in this matter had any problems
doing this? I was planning on reformating my PC as well. I own this copy of
XP, won't have it on more than 1 computer. Please reply. Thank you

What specific type of OEM installation or reovery CD do you have?

If you have a generic, unbranded OEM CD, such as accompanies computers
built by small systems builders, there should be no issue.

If, however, you have a branded, BIOS-locked installation or recovery
CD, it very likely won't work on the new motherboard.

Well, not sure I know how to tell for sure... It has a green WinXP booklet,
the disc and the sticker that ABS put on my case. But on the disc it says it
was preinstalled on my system... Does this help at all? Thanks for your
help. Please reply

By looking at the contents of the CD. (Or reading the manual that came
with the computer, I should think.

the disc and the sticker that ABS put on my case. But on the disc it says it

Does the CD contain many different files and folers, including one
entitled "\386?" If so, you have a true installation CD. It may still
be locked to the BIOS of your motherboard, though. Ask the computer
manufacturer.

Does the CD contain some sort of proprietary image of the hard drive?
If so, you have a Recovery CD.

Thank you for posting Bruce. Yes, my installation CD seems to be a 'true
installation' copy. I also called ABS and the tech I spoke with said I don't
have anything to worry about, because I do "own" that copy of XP. Thanks to
everyone who's posted.

You're describing a generic OEM install package. The sticker was with the
green booklet initially.
