Hi Everyone,
I have an aging installation of Windows ME, and
I want to upgrade it to XP (Home or Pro, I do not mind).

I understand that an upgrade version of XP is available.
Would it let me make a clean installation (using an NTFS
partition) or would I be restricted to using the same FAT
32 partition with just upgraded System Files? I was told
by someone online that with the upgrade version, it just
asks you to insert the ME Cd-rom before installing. Is
this true, and as I have a recovery disk instead of the
full Windows ME, will that work?

Thanks for any answers u can give,
Nathan Torreli.

During the Setup in XP, it detects other OS's, so surely
it'll find ME, and thus let me install over it? If not,
how do I change it to Xp, ready to install it afresh?

Lastly, I have the Windows 95 CD-ROM, if I put that in,
will XP upgrade accept it? Or does it have to be a later
version of Windows?

Nathan;
You can use the upgrade Windows XP to perform a Clean Installation
using the Windows 95 CD as qualifying media.

If you want to save all your files and documents including email, internet access [password, username etc] and desktop settings: then an upgrade installation is the better way to go.

You can launch the installation from Me, no problems there.

You can also change the formatting to NTFS during the installation, however many would argue that one takes the process one step at a time. Upgrade Op SYs then after everything is installed and XP is running just fine using FAT32, then choose to convert to NTFS. This is a valid option.

Should you decide for your own good reasons that you want a 'clean' install of XP, then boot off the XP CD [upgrade or full version] and choose those options that result in this happening, including delete original partition and reformat to NTFS, then proceed with XP installation. Doesn't take but a few minutes to accomplish the first few steps.

Along the way, XP installation will check for qualifying product [if using Upgarde Version] and you can insert any prior Windows CD [95, 98, Me of any edition] into the CD Drive for this to be satisfied, you will then be prompted to remove old Windows CD and reinsert the XP Upgrade CD.
