Upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro

I have purchased an upgrade package (XP Pro) to update my XP Home edition on
my laptop. Both packages, the one that came with the new laptop (XP Home)
and the upgrade package (XP Pro) are fully paid for and legal, according to
local laws and MS standards and policies.

My XP Home edition is fully updated with SP2 and my MS Office Apps are all
up to date also. I am a stickler for updates, et. al.

The problem: When I try to upgrade to XP Pro, the message I get is that
"there is a newer version of XP installed on your system than the one on the
disk, can not install...".

Problem defined: Appears SP2 is newer than XP Pro Upgrade that also includes
SP1 on the disk.

Resolution: ?? I would not post here if I had the answer. Trying to get to
MS Support is nearly impossible without a CC. My next move will be to get
very familiar with Linux and reaquanted with Unix. MS is really too hard to
deal with when you have simple problems like this one, and when it is not a
user problem that should be a chargeable event. The automated system sends
me to Sony, the maker of my laptop. Then they, in turn, send me back to a MS
Windows resolution center who sends me back to Sony. Hours lost over a
simple answer, I hope. What crap! Can anyone help me with this issue?

If I could upgrade to XP Pro, then MS would be prime as I purchased the copy
from Fry's Electronics store and it would qualify as a MS issue and not a
Sony issue.

Greetings,
Go to the Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/scroll down the list on
the right side until you reach "Windows XP Service Pack 2". Click that
entry to highlight it, and then click "Remove". This will uninstall SP2.
Then stick your XP Prof CD back in the CD-ROM drive and proceed to
accomplish your upgrade. If you have an SP2 CD, immediately install that
service pack. Whether you do or do not have an SP2 CD, immediately go to
the Windows Update Site.

Thanks, I guess that is my only option. Last time I tried this move I lost
all my hard drives until I had to reload from the emergency disks.

Two options:

1. Uninstall Service Pack 2 from your machine.

2. If you have a CD Burner then prepare a new XP Pro Upgrade CD that
has SP2 slipstreamed into it.
