I am going to upgrade my Windows OS to XP Professional
from Windows 98. If I backup my files using Windows Backup,
will I be able to reinstall them on XP Pro? How should I
prepare to upgrade?
Thank you,
Tim Welch

I believe that you should be able to. To prepare for
upgrading make sure that your computer meats the minimum
sytem standards. I personally believe that you should
have aleast 500 MHz 128 MB Ram and a 20 GB hard drive to
get everything xp offers. As long as you met the system
requirements xp should run smoothly for you though

--But heck what do i know I'm just 15--

If you backup with Windows 98 backup, you will have to restore with Windows
98 backup.
Backup your files by coping to another partition or a CD.

If you don't mind installing all of your old programs, I would do a clean
install.

No. WIndows XP's backup program is not compatible with Windows
98's.

Greetings --

Don't use Win98's native backup application to preserve your data;
the *.qic file format used in incompatible with WinXP's NTBackup
utility. Simply copy the desired files to another partition or CD.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp)

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98.

Additionally, run Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you
have any incompatible hardware components or applications.
