upgrading from ME to XP

I have a simple question about upgrading windows
I purchased my Compaq computer two years ago in Thailand. It came with Windows ME pre-installed. I was not given a CD with Windows ME on it, but was given three CDs called "Quick Restore" with the Compaq logo on them, and a Microsoft copyright. (Do those three CDs contain Windows ME?) I now want to upgrade my operating system to Windows XP Professional. I don't know if I need to purchase the upgrade edition, or the full edition of XP. How can I find out if I do indeed have a copy of Windows ME, whether it is registered legitimately or not, and if I need the full edition or only the upgrade edition to upgrade to XP. Can someone explain this to me
Thanks.

As long as you have ME on the computer you can buy an upgrade version.
You will still have the choice of an upgrade installation or a "new"
installation.
The upgrade overwrites ME and saves some of your settings(most of the time)
The New Installation will format ME(and anything else on that partition) out
of existance and install a fresh new XP on your computer. You will have to
get XP drivers for your hardware(sound/video etc)and you will have to redo
your Internet connection/email settings and a few more.
Both methods require that you have ME installed for verification purposes.
I do not believe that the "restore" CD that came with your system will work
for this purpose.
I would also run the upgrade advisor off the XP CD to verify that all
hardware will work with XP

this website has a very good step by step set of instructions
