Upgrading from Me Fails - "System Cannot find the path specified"

Upgrading from Windows Me to XP Home Edition.

Copied the CD Directory from the ISO Image file downloaded
from MSDN. Copid all files to D:\ (hard disk) and ran
Setup from hard disk. (Also tried to copy to D:\WinXP -
got the same error). Entered a valid product key.

While in "Preparing Installation" step asks to copy
current Windows System files. After "Copying" files is
almost done - get the message: "System Cannot find the
path specified". Does NOT say what the file is.

I tried to upgrade a different machine, got the exact same
error. Both machines have 128MB and have 1GB+ disk on the
C: drive.

An *.ISO is also not just an image of an operating system, it is an image of a CD, an exact format as it will appear when burnt to the CD. It is just a "pre-packaged" version of the CD. To make use of the ISO, you must burn the contents of it to a CD with your CD burning software. A perfect example is that you can get *.ISOs of games, applications, music CD's, and even operating systems. I prefer NERO for burning ISO's but any other CD burning suite should be able to also.

Carey,

Thanks for your response. But I am also getting the same
error, when I try to install from the DVD directly (latest
MSDN shipment). The reason I copied the image files (after
unpacking them) is because I dont have a CD burner.

So, my guess is there is some other problem. Is there a
way to find out on what this "Path" is that Setup is
complainig about - some log file??.

Do not copy the image files.....that will not work.
The DVDs are bootable and you'll be given a menu
selection of which O/S you wish to install or upgrade to.

That's not enough free space, and not enough RAM (even for Win Me)
either. I'd suggest either staying with Win Me on that computer, or if it is
a P-III or better, upgrade the RAM to 256 MB or more, and get a bigger hard
disk before trying to run Win XP Setup. Then when you do, install Win XP
clean rather than as an upgrade over Win Me.
