I jut purchased xp home on a compac, I have a full
version of xp professional from the university, can I
upgrade without losing the preinstalled packages and, if
so, how

I did that with my compaq laptop, all the apps are still on the laptop, but
all start menus items are reset to a normal install :( but all files are
still on the HD, under c:\compsv or something silly like that. You can also
download the compaq drivers and software for the laptop from www.compaq.com
I had money and so on with mine which i can still load by going to program
files and loading it from there, but the shortcuts that were there in the
start menu are not after the upgrade.

Hope this helps

You ought to be able to. But there is always a risk on a Compaq, which
use proprietary hardware and tend to have the system customised to work
with it, that a retail upgrade will not work. You could try asking
Compaq if there are known issues for *your* model
