I am running XP Home but want to upgrade to Pro. My
question is can I do this using only a XP pro OEM
version. I Thinking of buyng it and there is a big
difference in price between the OEM version and the new
XP Pro sp2 version, sp2 is available to download.

An OEM CD cannot be used to perform an upgrade of an earlier
OS, as it was designed to be installed _only_ upon an empty hard
drive. It can still be used to perform a repair installation (a.k.a.
an in-place upgrade) of an existing WinXP installation.

Hi,

OEM versions generally can only be used for a clean installation. As a rule,
they do not do upgrades. Look for an XP Pro upgrade retail disk, as this is
all you need and is cheaper than the full version. Note also that if your
upgrade disk does not contain at least the same service pack level as is
currently installed, then you will need to uninstall the service pack before
attempting to upgrade. Example: You currently have XP Home w/SP2 installed.
Your Upgrade disk is WinXP Pro w/SP1. In this case, you will need to
uninstall SP2 from the Home system before upgrading.

OEM stands for original equitment manufacture, are you in the mfg business,
the version to by is a retail copy of xp pro,SP2 really isnt needed because
like SP1 its downloadable,having SP1 or 2,pre installed might be a
consideration
if you connect to the internet thru a dial-up connection.

As Rick was trying to say. If you have SP 2 on your computer you will have
to either uninstall SP2 and possibly SP1 or 1a before upgrading Home to Pro
using a XP Pro Upgrade CD OR you may slipstream SP 2 to any XP Pro Upgrade
CD and then upgrade to Pro that way. Using the Autostreamer program is
effortless as long as you have the correct equipment and files.

You can download the free Autostreamer Program here:

The instructions for using Autostreamer are also at the web site. You will
need a CD burner and CD burning software to create the PRO SP2 upgrade disk.

You can order the CD containing the SP 2 update here:
