Hi

This is a general question to see if others would do an upgrade from 2000 to
XP or would do a fresh install. I have read that the upgrade is a lot better
than what it used to be with previous version of Windows. I have always been
of the opinion that it is better to do a fresh install but was wanting to get
opinions from others who might have tried the upgrade.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I think most would agree that a fresh install is preferable to an
upgrade. That said, I would still recommend doing an
Upgrade first. You can always do a clean install if it doesnt work out to
your liking. Backup your important data before
you proceed.

The Windows XP process is quite a bit different from the way it was
done with previous versions of Windows and the results of upgrade
installs are successful in a very high percentage of instances. I
personally cannot ever recall an instance where I had to abandon an
upgrade install in favor of a clean install.

When you upgrade an existing version of Windows to Windows XP the
first thing that happens is that the existing Windows folder is
renamed to a temporary working name. Then Windows XP creates a new
Windows folder and does a basic clean install into this folder. When
this is complete the next step is to import whatever is needed from
the old Windows folder in terms of files, subfolders, registry
entries, etc. Then Windows XP completes the install and deletes the
renamed old Windows folder.

Hope this explains the situation.

Good luck

Thanks for the information. Does this mean that the original C:\Winnt
folder will be removed and replaced with XP's C:\Windows folder.

I believe, but am not absolutely certain, that when you upgrade from
Windows 2000 using the \Winnt folder that the name will be retained.

At least 99 and 44/100% of my upgrading experience has been with
upgrading from the 9x versions of Windows.

Good luck
