I am trying to upgrade my computer from Windows 2000 Pro to XP Pro, but when I start the installation process form the XP disc a message comes up and says Windows cannot upgrade from 2000 Pro to XP pro. However, all the help documents I have read so far say you can upgrade. What to do

You cannot upgrade XP Pro from any Windoze OS. Clean install is the only way it will go...

The question was how to upgrade from 2000 Pro to XP Pro. You need to get your eyes checked or get some more sleep.

Greetings --

Did you by any chance purchase an OEM version of WinXP Pro? By
design, An OEM CD cannot be used to perform an upgrade of an earlier
OS, as it was designed to be installed _only_ upon an empty hard
drive. It can still be used to perform a repair installation (a.k.a.
an in-place upgrade) of an existing WinXP installation.

Greetings --

I presume that your complete unfamiliarity with WinXP, as
evidenced by your inability to spell "Windows," is the reason that
you're giving an answer that's completely incorrect.

Have you bought one of the 'OEM' CDs, sold with an item of hardware, and
marked 'for supply only with a new compuiter' or similar? These will
only do clean installs, after formatting the disk. You need a retail
copy - Upgrade variant (though a retail Full one will do an upgrade
there is no point in spending the extra for it)

Sorry, but that's completely false. My guess is that the OP's
problem is that he's trying to do an upgrade with an OEM CD,
which will *not* do upgrades. Retail versions, either Full or
Upgrade, *will* upgrade from 2000 Professional (as well as from
other versions of Windows).

Depends on the type of XP CD you have. An OEM CD -cannot- be used to
upgrade from previous versions of Windows. While a Retail Full or
Upgrade version can. What do you have?
