Is auto-arrange icons turned on?
right click on the desktop, select Arrange icons. If Auto arrange is
checked, then uncheck it.

I get the sense that you're not stupid--why does your behavior in this NG
negate that. I trust you may have some worthwhile suggestions for the OP's,
so why don't you show it.
I'm not out to start a fight with anyone, but I don't like to see posters
ask a question, and get a totally smart-ass answer from probably the best
forum to go for help with their particular problem.
Like I said, I suspect you know your stuff, cut the "newbies" some slack.
