Bob

I recently bought and installed Windows XP Professional.
Ever since all of the sound-bytes get cracky and
scratchy. Such things as log-on sounds, log-off sounds,
wav's and mp3's. It's especially bad during gameplay.
Both my Speakers and my Headphones get the distortion,
and both are in good working condition.

Here is a small list of things I have tried fo fix this:
1. Reinstall Drivers
2. Update Drivers
3. Rollback Drivers
4. Adjust volume levels
5. Mute Line/In
6. Switch to the On-Board AC'97 sound
7. Swap PCI Slots
8. Check Firmware connections
9. Search for firmware updates.
10. Mess around w/ DMA on the HD(thinking it was HD
distortion somehow)

After much work and much frustration nothing worked. The
On-Board sound does the same thing too. If any of you
have suggestions at how I can resolve this and get my
sound back to crystal quality I'd love to hear em!
Thanks for your time!
Bob.
P.S.-Here is a small run-down of my System Stats:
Athlon XP 1600+ Homebuilt system
512Megs of PC2700 DDR-RAM
128Meg GeForce4Ti4200 8xAGP
Sound Blaster Live! Value.

Just upgraded to WMP9, everything is still scratchy.

I had fresh installed XP after reformatting. Does WinXP
allow you to re-install over-top of itself like previous
versions? If so I may try that... also any other
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
-Bob
P.S.- It's not JUST music, but also system sounds, in-
game sounds etc.

Yes, with WMP9 you can do a repair install which is basically re-installing
on top of itself. See the website I recommended. Its by a guy who designed
WMP..... !

Cheers,
Jerry

As I said, go to the website and read it through.

Thing is this isn't a WMP problem, the problem is
surfacing in games and other programs. I've tried the
stuff for WMP9 and its not helpped :(

Speakers on the blink ?

Speakers on the blink ?

I doubt it since both my Speakers and Headphones get
the distortion, and both were in full working order on
Windows98.
Is there anything about an OS ITSELF that can cause a
problem like this? It's the only thing I can think since

1.)speakers and headphones work fine on my other PC
2.)both AC'97 AND Soundblaster have the distortion, and
3.)Everything worked fine on Win98.

Also I just reformatted AGAIN and reinstalled WinXP, and
still have the trouble. :(

What a mission!
Same thing is happening to me, only I have a Creative
Vibra 128 card. Must be a compatability issue with the
Creative range? I've been searching for days for answers
and nothing yet. Will keep you posted if I find anything.

I've been searching for a solution for a similar problem. My system sounds
are only occasionally scratchy, and sometimes MP3's crackle. Where it
surfaces most is sound from my DVD drive and, to a lesser extant, my CD-ROM
drive.

My system is a Micron Millennia B51-1003, AMD 1Ghz Duron proc. Mobo is the
Gigabyte 7DX, which has the integrated AC'97 CODEC.

Everything was fine in Windows ME, and it's only after upgrading to XP Home
that I began to have this problem. I bought a Creative Extigy, which uses
USB 2.0, but with the same results on the DVD drive, although the CD-ROM
drive improved somewhat.
