I'm trying to upgrade from 98SE and shortly after the
upgrade starts it kicks the system off and reboots. The
system is a Celeron 566, 5 GB HDD, 192 MB RAM. I've
reformatted and reinstalled 98 2 or 3 times with the same
result. The compatibility function says there are no
hardware or software compatibility issues.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to make the install
go.

Thanks,

Thanks,

You're pushing it rather with that set-up, especially the hard drive. XP
requires 1.5GB for a minimal installation, then there's the other
applications that install 100MB or so to the Windows folder. Hard drives are
relatively cheap (around a £1 a GB for a 40GB Maxtor) so it makes no sense
to attempt an installation on such a puny drive.

I suggest you run the 'Upgrade Advisor' (found on the XP CD) to see if your
system is capable of being upgraded. You also don't need to install over
98 - simply boot from the XP CD (you will need to change the BIOS boot
sequence if necessary) and follow the instructions.

It is also preferable to remove all extraneous peripherals (and internals -
i.e. sound card, modem, NIC, other optical drive if you have more than one).
