If I have win 98 on the computer now, and I up grade with
a full version of win xp will I loose everything on my
computer?
.
As you run the setup from the disk, it asks if you want
to do a clean (delete everything and start from fresh) or
do an upgrade installation (which supposedly keeps all
your settings, info, etc.). If you've bought the upgrade
already, there's a tester on the disk which will tell you
what will and will not be compatible if you decide to
upgrade. Supposedly you can check for compatibility
online at MS as well (if you haven't bought the upgrade
yet). Apparently, just about anything made for Windows
95 and up will work with Windows XP (though you may have
to use the built-in compatability mode in Windows XP)
My personal experience is that I did the upgrade
installation and everything worked as the compatability
test predicted. But after awhile, I noticed some glitches
and slowed reaction times, etc. which I didn't like. So
I saved all my important stuff and performed a clean
install anyway. Now it runs much better.
I hope this helps you out. By the way, I found an
excellent book at Sam's Club for $25 called "Using
Microsoft Windows XP Professional" by Robert Cowart &
Brian Knittel (Published by QUE). At 1200+ pages, it
explains the whole install process, as well as anything
you might want to know about XP. It has been incredibly
useful at times.
