Just curious... it is possible with an upgrade copy of WinXP to install
fresh, correct? Am I correct in assuming that the disk itself is the same,
but the price is decreased due to previous purchases through MS? So, for
example, a user has purchased Win2k sometime in the past, purchased an
upgrade copy of XP, but then is required to format the OS HDD for some
reason. Is this possible, and more importantly, allowable by the eula?

Yes it is. Boot with the XP CD... it will ask for the qualifying product...
simply swap CDs over and it will check your 2000 CD and verify that you do
indeed have the qualifying product.... then swap CDs back and the clean
installation will continue.

In that case, provided he has a 'regular' Win2000 CD, not some OEM
Restore one (not likely with 2000) what you do is boot the XP CD, take
New Install, and in that hit ESC to erase the present partition and make
a new one. Then when it asks where Windows is, you show it the
'qualifying' CD in the drive for a moment - putting the XP one back when
it asks.

Aside from Upgrade making this check, it and 'Full' are the same. There
is also OEM - a full version but which will 8only* do a clean install,
and which may not subsequently be moved to a different machine
