I want to upgrade from ME to XP but in doing so I also
want to format, my son will do it, the hard drive. This
is to get all the "junk" off it. The question is "do I
need to purchase XP (full version) or XP upgrade?"

Thanks for the help.

If you own either a "full version" or "upgrade version"
of Windows 98 or ME, and it is not installed on any other computer,
it will qualify for installing Windows XP "upgrade version"
"clean". It is not necessary to install Windows 98 or ME, then upgrade
to Windows XP Home. Also, the Windows 98 or ME Product Key
is not required when performing a "clean install", only the installation CD.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Upgrade will do. Two cases arise:

Your ME is based on a 'proper' retail CD - in that case you boot the XP
CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New
Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete
the current partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next
stage. When Setup asks you where Windows is, show it the ME CD in the
drive for a moment, and put the XP CD back on a blues screen asking for
a CD.

If it was an 'OEM' restore/recovery CD, for a machine supplied with the
ME, then Run the CD from the existing system. Enter Install, change
Upgrade to New Install, then when it asks you to confirm where, you can
again hit ESC and get the chance to select the current partition,
delete it, and create a new RAW one

This will by then have satisfied the check that you are eligible to use
the Upgrade. This first time you probably might as well do it that way
anyway, and not need bother about booting the CD
