Hi,
I've been trying to upgrade from xp home edition to xp professional but
without any luck, I have a Dell (explains alot) Dimension 4550. I've been
told it's because I'd have to buy Dell's version of xp professional this
can't be right, any suggestion ? Thanks in advance

What problem are you having?

In general, you should uninstall all devices such as
scanners, printers, etc and remove the cables. You should
also disable or uninstall anti-virus programs.
The language of the upgrade must be the same as that which
is installed, English on English.
If the XP Pro is not SP2 and you have XP Home with SP2 you
will have to uninstall SP2, do the upgrade and reinstall
SP2.

Explains nothing, actually.

What happens when you try? What specific error messages do you get?
What do your system event logs report? What specific type of WinXP Pro
CD are you trying to use: retail full, retail upgrade, or OEM? What
specific troubleshooting steps have you already taken, and what were the
results of each?

No one can help if you don't provide at least a modicum of information.

Bruce,
there was no need to talk down to me ! If there was a error message I would
have stated one, the xp pro I'm trying to install it retail, and when trying
to install it gets to the finalizing installation point and then goes no
further my pc shuts down then restarts over and over again.

Bruce was not talking down to you. Although you may have thought you
made a good post, you did not provide enough information to get any
specific help. Even adding the above information would have been
useful.

No, you do not have to use XP Pro purchased from Dell. I still don't
have enough information to give you specific advice. I'm also not sure
what your comment "I have a Dell (explains alot) Dimension 4550" means.
Between my colleague and I, we've got hundreds of Dell machines running
and are very satisfied with them. Your particular computer might have
hardware problems of course, or some other issue(s) that would cause
difficulties. With so little information from you about the system (was
it running right before the attempted install, why the need to upgrade,
did you do a clean install or upgrade install, etc.) I can't guess.

At this point, your best course of action is probably to take the
machine to a computer professional, not your local equivalent of
BigStoreUSA. Someone who can see the machine will be able to diagnose
the issue(s) quickly.
