Hello,

I added some RAM to my PC and at the same time purchased a Windows XP
OEM Version. I have Windows 2000 OEM installed. I would like to
upgrade to Windows XP. Is there any way to do this ? or my only option
is a clean install?

Thanks

Only a "Retail Version" of Windows XP Professional has the
capability to upgrade over Windows 2000. An "OEM Version"
can only be installed via a "Clean Install".

Greetings --

Unlike a full version retail CD, an OEM CD cannot be used to
perform an upgrade of an earlier OS, as it was designed to be
installed _only_ upon an empty hard drive. It can still be used to
perform a repair installation (a.k.a. an in-place upgrade) of an
existing WinXP installation.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply

I have a full retail licence for another machine.
Would it be a licence violation (and would it work) if i first
upgraded via the full retail and then repaired via the OEM?

As far as i know the code is the same and the Key would be the correct
one.

Has anyone tried this

Thanks

Greetings --

I can't really say whether or not it would work, or not. That's
one particular experiment I haven't tried. As for the licensing
issue, I'd say that it's a temporary technical violation, but the
license that ultimately ends up on the machine would be what counts
when activation time comes.
