I upgraded last year to XP Pro, student version, and now I
need to do a clean install. The original 98 cd is lost in
the jungle of my home and the installation procedure halts
because it wants to read from this very cd.
Any suggestions?

Unless you have an old Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/2000
installation CD, you'll not be able to perform a "clean install"
of Windows XP using the "Upgrade Version". You'll have to
purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP.

Greetings --

Find the CD. You need to "prove" that you're entitled to use an
upgrade license, and that Win98 CD is your only proof. Hint: if you
can't find yours, you can probably get another quite inexpensively at
a used computer/software shop, or on eBay.
