Upgrade to XP Advice Needed

I am currently running Windows 98SE. I would like to upgrade to Windows XP.
Can I do this without loosing all the data currently on my computer?

Secondly, I have two hard drives and would like to keep Windows 98SE on the
second one. This would allow me to boot to it if I wish to play older games
which are not compatible with XP. Is this possible?

Yes but it is not recommended. XP handles upgrades better than previous
versions of Windows But I have seen problems that were only solved by a
clean install. You should back up your current configuration then do a clean
install of XP, reinstall your programs then restore your data.

Yes. This may depend on your motherboard and how it supports booting from a
hard drive other than the primary master. The easiest method would be to
leave Windows 98SE on the primary master. Install XP on the other drive and
it will take care of the dual booting setup.

Make sure you have a full and complete backup of all data. XP can do an
upgrade but if something goes wrong you'll need to restore the system.
Make sure you run the compatibility wizard to make sure the system can
handle XP

If you computer is that old that it is running 98, you are better off
just waiting until you buy a new computer to upgrade to XP.

Yes. You can buy and use the Upgrade version. Beware the advice
of those to tell you it is better to do a clean installation than
an upgrade. Unlike with previous versions of Windows, an upgrade
to XP replaces almost everything, and usually works very well.
My recommendation is to at least try the upgrade, since it's much
easier than a clean installation. You can always change your mind
and reinstall cleanly if problems develop.

However, be aware that there are no guarantees that you won't
lose your data. An operating system upgrade is a big step and any
time you take such a big step there is risk. For that reason,
it's always prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything you
can't afford to lose before beginning.
