Upgrade to "New" kept all my Program Files...

.... but needless to say they don't run. I chose
the "new" option thinking it would essentially wipe my
drive and start over (after having ME, seemed like the
best option ;-) ...but it didn't wipe anything except the
OS.

I just tried to reinstall Norton Firewall, which seemed to
go fine, but the program won't run. So it appears that
just reinstalling all my programs - which I intended to do
anyway - may not work?

Also, what about uninstalling programs that aren't in the
Add/Remove Programs and don't have their own uninstall?

Thanks,
Jeff

This posting is not entirely clear. If what you wanted to do was wipe the
hard drive, and start using Windows XP with a clean install, then you should
boot from the Windows XP CD, choose Repair Console and delete the primary
partition. Note that **ALL** the information on that primary partition will
be lost. Be sure to back up what you will need in data files, address
book(s), configuration files and e-mail files.
After deleting the primary partition, Run the Windows Compatibility Check
to see if there are any issues you need to address before upgrading. Then
choose New Installation (Advanced) rather than the default Upgrade option,
and you will install XP clean. You may need to insert a Windows 98 or Me CD
as proof of ownership of a qualifying version of Windows XP. Then spend some
time running the critical and recommended upgrades of Windows XP and create
a Restore Point.
Then re-install your applications, one at a time and inside of a day or
two, you'll have yourself a clean, smooth copy of Windows XP and it will be
rock-solid stable.
