I'm thinking of upgrading to XP Pro from XP home.
How clean is this? In the past some upgrades left a lot of clutter and no
longer used files around.
Upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro is probably the simplest possible
upgrade of any Microsoft operating system, as all that is really being
done is to add those Windows components and accessories that are
unique to XP Pro and are not included with XP Home.
Other than these specific items the two versions are the same; and
they are produced from the same source code base. In particular there
is zero difference in performance or stability between the two
versions.
So unless you have a known or anticipated future need for at least one
of those items that are included with XP Pro but not with XP Home
there is little or no benefit in doing the upgrade.
As for the upgrade itself, just follow the normal precautions (backup
your data, shut off antivirus programs, clean up the hard drive, etc.)
for doing an operating system upgrade and you should be fine. See MVP
Gary Woodruff's web page on upgrading to XP at

Good luck
