I attempted to upgrade a friends PC from 98 to XP home
edition. It ran thru the initial install from the CD and
took approx. 75 minutes. After it finished loading from
the CD the pc restarted and then came back with screens
that looked like we used to see when we loaded the
windows 3 series. I let it go and it restarted the pc.
The same DOS like screens came back and it re-loaded
everything again. I took out the CD and it went back to
the initial install screen and started to load files
again. By that time it was 11:00 pm and I shut it down.

What did I do wrong and how can I correct it?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can we assume that prior to loading XP, you ran the cd from Win 98 and
selected option 4, the compatibility advisor?.. can we also assume that the
only devices connected were keyboard, mouse and monitor?.. what version of
XP Home were you using?.. full retail, upgrade or OEM?..

Use a Win 98 start-up diskette to re-partition and re-format the drive..
install Win 98, and check that the system can handle XP BEFORE attempting
the upgrade again..
