Can I buy a Vi$ta Ultimate x64 OEM from the shop that sold me the PC and
WinXP Pro OEM? I seem to remember that OEM edition could never be
upgraded...

I always thought that was the case too, but yesterday we upgraded XP Home to
XP Pro (both oem) by running the the install program from the Windows
desktop. It recommended the upgrade, but I don't know about going from one
version of Windows to another.

Hi,

An OEM version can certainly be upgraded. What you can't do is use an OEM
version to do an upgrade to an existing system, it has to be installed
cleanly.

My question was about the license issue, not technical one...

You should be able to buy x64 Ultimate OEM from anyone that carries it, you
don't have to go back to the shop you bought the PC from unless you want to.
OEM is the full version with two things to keep in mind - 1) no support from
Microsoft and 2) no transferring the OS to a different machine once it is
installed on one.

I picked up OEM x32 Ultimate from a local shop for a little less than 50% of
cost of the retail package and did a clean install and system has been
running smoothly ever since. With the OEM version, like the full retail
version, you do not have to install from within Windows 2000 or XP. The
upgrade version requires that you install from within an activated and WGA
version of XP\2000.

An OEM Vista will upgrade an XP installation, I've tried it myself.

You're from China. I thought you didn't worry about licences according
to Janet Chen.
