I don't know which to use, the Upgrade or the New
Installation. How do I figure that out? What I want to do
is completely get rid of Windows ME because it has been
nothing but trouble (or do I?) Which installation do I
use. I tried the new installation once and I got a message
that said something about 'partitions'. I'm quite computer
illiterate, but I do know that I don't like ME. Can
someone help a computer dummy? Thanks!!!

See the links below, and prep your system for a clean install, but do the
upgrade. You will be covered if the upgrade goes bad, and in my experience
is very rare to non-existent.
The XP upgrade almost completely replaces all the previous files related to
Win98/Me that it is very close to a clean install. The difference will be a
larger footprint and your compatible application will not have to be
reinstalled and reconfigured.
The selection of upgrade, or new install during the XP setup; will give you
the option to create a dual boot if you have multiple existing partitions or
by deleting the current OS partition, a clean install. Do not install XP to
the same partition as Me.

Rob,

if you don't mind installing all your software again, go for the
new installation. Otherwise upgrade. The new installation has
the advantage of being free of any older burdens, therefore it
is a bit cleaner and slimmer.

Avoid partitions. You need only one. The Windows XP installer
can remove partitions and can install onto an empty hard disk
(by creating a new partition).
