Upgrade ME to XP

I see two products in the shops: Upgrade for users of old
windows products and full product.

What's the real difference apart from price?

My ME set up has loads of problems (eg non working system
restore) and a virus or two lurking in the depths -
deactivated via msconfig but not removable.

Ideally, I want to wipe the hard disc and start again.

What's the best way?

If you have a Microsoft Windows 98/ME installation CD, you can
use the "Upgrade Version" of Windows XP to perform a "clean install".
If you do not have a Microsoft Windows 98/ME installation CD, then
you'll need the "Full Version" for a "clean install".

I have the Dell Reinstallation disc, will that do the job?

Is "clean installation" the same as reformatting the hard
drive and starting over?

Hello
No restore disc's will not work it will have to be a retail version cd.

A 'recovery disc' will not work for a clean installation (at least I've
never come across one that will). If you do not have a retail version, you
need to either purchase the full version, or reinstall ME (which I would
advise against as you will reinstall Dell's proprietary crap) and upgrade
over the top.

Dell supplies a Dell branded version of the Windows Me OS and can be used as
qualifying media for a clean install.
