I purchased a Compaq Presario - it came loaded with Win
XP Home - I installed Windows XP Pro - I have no sound -
I have taken it to the retailer (Best Buy)- where they
have kept it for 5 days total (took it back after they
said it was fixed the first time) - I finally called
Compaq Support and they say XP Pro is not supported on
this computer - it is a SR1030NX Model - Is there anyway
I can get around this - can I install a sound card to
make it work or do I have to reload Windows XP Home? It
tells me there is "no audio device" and on dxdiag it
tells me it is being used by another program and to
change the priority level on my device manager (which I
tried). Incidentally, there was no recovery software
provided when I purchased the new computer that was load
with the softwared (June 7 of this year), but the Compaq
support has sent me these cds which I now have in my
possession.

What they mean by not supported is; 'as we didn't supply xp pro we are not
going to help you' It doesn't mean it wont function.
Assuming the sound is onboard, visit Compaq site for drivers for your sys.
BTW I have to ask, as it seems yr not exactly into IT why did you install xp
pro?

Unless you have a 64bit version of XP Pro, the sound card drivers are the same.

Just download the files to your hard drive and try to reinstal them. Before 'reinstalling' go to device manager and delete the sound card. rebbot and it will autodetect and ask for drivers.
