Upgrade from Windows ME to XP

I was installing an HP printer/fax/copy machine on my mothers computer & now
the computer won't boot. I get an error msg "error loading explorer.exe.
You must re-install windows." Can't boot to safe mode because of the same
message. Tried running setup from DOS & that won't work either. So I'm
wondering if I can upgrade to WinXP without being able to load WinME. I can
get the computer to boot from the CD-Rom.

I've never tried this before, so could use any and all help here. She is
lost without her computer. (She's 80 yrs young & loves her computer!)

Thanks for any help & advice available.

Hi Bob,

Yes you can run the upgrade without loading WinME provided that you are
certain that the system can handle WinXP.

What happens when you try to reload WinME from DOS? You are booting with a
floppy and running setup from the WinME disk?

Rick, thanks for the reply. The computer is a Dell desktop that I purchased
for her a couple of years ago. Can't remember the configuration, but
probably on the edge of acceptable for XP. I did find some info last nite on
this problem in the forums, so I do have a couple of things to try before
trying the upgrade.

Maybe I should try to find a copy of WIN2000 instead of trying XP. Any
suggestions??

When I try to run setup at a DOS prompt from the ME disk, I get the first
screen with a message that says that some additional information is needed
and to follow the link on the setup screen, but there is no link. Clicking
on the error message aborts the process.

Thanks for your help.

Bob

Hi Bob,

I'd suggest verifying the system specifications before deciding on an
upgrade. Have you tried in any of the WinME groups on this problem? I've not
seen an error like that, and the folks there may be a better source of
information.
