Upgrade from ME to XP

I am upgrading from ME to XP, but it keeps stopping when reaching 'installing
devices' with approx 37 minutes left of the install (does the same from a
clean install as well). I have run XP on here previously, but recently
fdisked my harddrive and started from scratch after which point I am unable
to load on XP.
I have checked all my drives and hardware which are all working fine,
scanned all disks, tried safe mode install, disconnecting any additional
devices etc etc, but still not getting anywhere.
Have tried to look where it is stopping during the install and it seems to
be when it is installing PCI devices (can't be 100% sure though!)
I have searcehd all the microsoft knowledge files and tried all of the
suggestions in there - any ideas?
Seems strange that I have had this working before on he same PC, exact same
setup and nothing has changed but now it won't take the install..
It is XP Pro I am trying to install.

Are you sure your source disk is in good shape and have you tried a
re-format?
 
I have tried two different source disks and also tried to install on both of
my hard drives. All were reformatted, all i did was reformat, put on ME do
the necessary upgrades (not many) and tried to upgrade. Not done anything
else, only thing I have installed is my modem but tried before installing
this and had same problem. It is starting to dirve me totally insane now....
 
Sourse disk is in exceelent condition, brand new, but have tried another as
well just in case and that does the exactly the same thing.
Reformatted both drives, only thing installed on them is Windows ME and
obviously my modem. Have tried abssolutely everything I can think of.
Any more ideas? (before I throw the PC out of the window!)
Oh also ran diagnostics on EVERYTHING I could think of including the coffee
maching..

I don't think any upgrades are necessary or helpful to go from ME to XP.

You also may want to consider hardware problems. Overheating or some
bad memory.
