Richard

I have recently purchased XP Pro so that I can 'upgrade'
from XP Home. My laptop has Pro and Pro seems better
particularly with networking.
However, I can find nothing to tell me whther an upgrade
is possible or whether i have to remove Home (ugh) and
install Pro.
Can anyone tell me and are there any articles around on
carrying this out?

Hi Richard,

Yes, an upgrade from Home to Pro is possible. Have a look at the Eligibility
for In-Place Upgrade chart here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/matrix.mspx

To perform the upgrade:

Put your Windows XP Professional Upgrade or Full install CD into the CD
drive. Autoplay starts up and bring up the installation page. Click on the
Install Windows XP arrow.
In the Windows Setup dialog box, accept the Upgrade (Recommended) option in
the Installation Type drop down list box. Click on Next.
In the License Agreement dialog box, select the I accept this agreement
option and click on Next.
Key in your Product key in the Your Product Key dialog box and then click on
Next.
At the Get Updated Setup Files page, the choice is up to you........I
normally select the No, skip this step and continue installing Windows
option. Click on Next.
Setup now continues the install process. Your computer will restart few
times during setup.......this is normal.
When installation is complete, click on Next on the Welcome to Microsoft
Windows page.
You'll need to activate Windows XP Pro......you can activate now or, if you
want, activate it later by clicking on No, remind me every few days and
then click on Next.
Click on Finish on the Thank you page.

Regards,

just done it today. upgraded, ok.
few problems WPA didn't recognise product key,so i had to run recovery console after rebooting from cd.(change bios settings)
now i have lots of problems with drivers. Even after i ran upgradecheck switch and windows inform me that there was no expected problems for the upgrade with any software, I thought also from Xp home to Xp pro I would get no problems.
no i have graphic & audio card prob & firewire driver upgrades to do. Plus a few more.

I guess it is worth it in the end. but work it is, I also didn't want a full installation, but of caused be prepared.

Good luck

Clean install is the way to go:
XP Pro
WUpdates (from CD)
DirectX
Chipset drivers
Video
Sound
Programs

I thought I was the only such afflicted person. I have
never found a definitive answer, nor have I been able to
do it. I too prefer Pro. "Next time" I'll just wipe Home
