I installed xp over 98 on a gateway 400 and it seemed to install fine except
it doesn't load the startup screen, I see the xp loading but then I get a
black screen, don't know what I can do now aside from a new computer, but It
is a third computer so it was mainly just for internet access and I got
greedy. Laura

Boot into Safe Mode and open your Device Manager.
Right-click on the Display Adapter and select Uninstall.
Reboot and Windows XP will reinstall the generic VGA
driver. Next, download the latest Windows XP drivers
from your video adapter manufacturer's web site and install.

Carey, thankyou for your help, but I am still stuck, I got it in the
safemode and reinstalled the display adapter driver, but don't know how to
get my video adapter manufacturer, is the video adapter the same as display
adapter? I reinstalled my wireless usb adapter but can't connect, I guess
because it is in the safe mode??? The display adapter is a RAGE 128
VRAGP BUT I didn't see video adapter in the device manager??? thanks, Laura

Ok, great, I dn ld'd the video driver from G.W and success, even
corrorboration/MS!! thankyou, Laura
