What product do I buy to upgrade a pc from 2k to XP pro.

Not a fresh install - just keep all things the same/save all data - just
upgrade the OS.

Also recommend a good mail order vendor - thanks.

You can buy either the Windows XP Professional Full version or
the Upgrade version. Either will do what you want, but because
the Upgrade version is cheaper (and contains the same software)
that's what you should choose.

Do *not* buy an OEM version, which can *not* do an upgrade.
 
In addition to what Ken said, if you choose to get the upgrade, do NOT
dispose of your Win2k CD because you will need to show it if you ever need
to reinstall. You do not need to install it but will be asked to insert it
into the CD drive during the installation.

If you have only a restore or recovery CD (if Win2k was pre-installed on
your system), then you will probably have to restore it before reinstalling
WinXP because the XP installer will not be able to see the files that it
needs to see to verify that you are eligible to use the upgrade.

You would need to buy XP Pro Upgrade and do an upgrade over the top (or if
you wish, a fresh install by reformatting/repartitioning HDD).
